course description:painting/drawing

The focus of this class is plein air painting. We will build on the tradition of painting from observation. While working in the field students will be challenged by the extraordinary terrain of the French countryside, vineyards, and beaches. They will spend time analyzing architecture and its relationship to the natural environment.
While the focus will be on a traditional subject, we will also concentrate on the ideas prevalent in contemporary drawing and painting.

Classroom discussion will center on the role that these ideas play in the current art climate and how these ideas have redefined drawing to incorporate all types of mark making. Students will be encouraged to look beyond the traditional marks used to describe the landscape and explore new dialogues that will expand their current visual language. Group and individual critiques will help define and stimulate artistic growth. The class will conclude with a group exhibition showcasing the work created.
